Its primary purpose is to enable the CPU to act as a node within an ARCNET network, allowing it to exchange data with other PLCs, PCs, or peripheral devices at high speeds. Unlike standard Ethernet, ARCNET provides a highly predictable data transmission environment, which is critical for time-sensitive control applications. The module typically features a 9-pin D-sub connector for the network interface and internal logic that offloads the communication processing from the main CPU, ensuring that control cycle times remain consistent even during heavy network traffic.
